Rubio Application, Care and Maintenance

A one-coat hardwax oil that colours and protects in a single layer. It is not a film — you feed oil into the timber, then take every last bit of the excess back off. Get that one idea right and the rest follows.

Quick start — the whole job in seven steps

  1. Sand to 120 grit (floors 100). Don’t go finer — smoother timber drinks less oil, so you lose colour and protection.
  2. Clean. Vacuum, then wipe with Raw Wood Cleaner and let it dry fully. Oil bonds to dust instead of wood.
  3. Mix 3 parts A to 1 part B. Stir A first. Mix only what you’ll use — it dies in 4–6 hours.
  4. Spread thin with a beige scrubby pad, in a patch you can finish in 30 minutes.
  5. Wait 5–10 minutes while it soaks in. Don’t walk away and forget it.
  6. Wipe off ALL excess with a lint-free cloth. Everything off within 30 min. It must feel dry, never tacky.
  7. Leave it. Dry 12–24 h. No water for 5 days. Vacuum only after 2 days.
  8. Do a test patch on offcuts first — every timber takes colour differently.
  • Temperature 8–30 °C
  • Humidity 35–60%
  • Timber moisture 8–12%
  • Keep air moving
  • Lint-free cloths

⚠ Used cloths and pads can catch fire on their own

This is not a figure of speech. Oil Plus 2C contains linseed oil, and cloths, pads or paper soaked in it generate their own heat as they dry and can ignite unattended — in a bin, a bucket, or a pile on the bench. Never screw them up and bin them. Soak every used cloth and pad in water, seal them in a metal container with a lid, and take them to a waste facility. Do it the moment you finish, not later. If that has to wait, spread them out flat outdoors instead.

Your choices

Every job needs one preparation at step 2 — pick from A to D. Everything after that is genuinely optional.

Preparation — pick one

  • ARaw Wood Cleaner — the standard preparation, ready to use, for ordinary new timber.75–100 m²/L · Dry 15–60 min · Then oil
  • BDeep Cleaner — for oily or dense timber like teak or merbau. A concentrate: dilute to max 5% in water.200–300 m²/L · Dry ≈30 min · Then oil
  • CTannin Primer — for tannic timber that gets wet, like oak — worktops and bathrooms.≈50 g/m² · Dry thoroughly · Then oil
  • DWoodPrep — opens the grain for a deeper, richer colour on dense timber.to 10 m²/L · Dry completely · Then oil

Change the colour — optional

  • EPrecolor Easy — water-based, 14 mixable colours under the oil. Colours only; it does not protect.10–15 m²/L · Dry ≈12 h · 15–25 °C
  • FPre-Aging — an aged, smoked look on any species, without the gamble of a reactive stain.10–15 m²/L · Dry 24 h · 15–25 °C

After the oil — optional

  • GSheenPlus — a durable satin top coat over the cured oil. Longer waits: full cure is 7 days, not 5.≈125 m²/L · Dry 24–36 h · Cure 7 days

Looking after it

First, while it cures

  • 48 hours: keep the surface object-free and handle it as little as possible. No rugs, no furniture.
  • 5 days: touch dry long before this, but not hardened. No water or liquid until day five.

Then, ongoing

  • Surface Care for spot cleaning — and the first thing to try on most marks.
  • Universal Maintenance Oil when it’s gone flat and lifeless.
  • Don’t use steam mops, supermarket floor cleaners, wax or silicone polish.

Something’s gone wrong? Don’t panic — a penetrating finish is repaired in place, usually only on the spot it happened. The Care & Maintenance sheet covers stains, marks and re-oiling a worn patch.
